Realistic or Modern Detectives vs. Crime Agents

ModernRanger

The Guardian and Protector
The Secret War

You are lead into a small, dimly lit room. In the room sits a single man behind a table. The man, his face shadowed by the single light that hung above his head. He sat flipping through the pages in a single file folder. As you walk in, he slowly looks up, after a few moments he says, "Please take a seat."

He gestures to a chair on the other side of the table. As you pull the seat out and sit down, the man glances back down at his file. After a few more seconds the man spoke, "Hello, my name is Detective Gerhardt, but you can call me Jethro. You are here because you seem to think you are skilled enough to join my team. Keep in mind, we deal with only the most difficult cases. Cases that are classified as unsolvable. If you really want to be a part of this team then you best be prepared to handle even the most extreme of cases."

Jethro was silent for several long moments before continuing, "Our first case alone involves the agents of a Criminal Organization. These people make the Mafia look like a bunch of amateurs. They have a hand in every kind of organized crime you can imagine. To bring them down will take the sharpest minds." Jethro leans over the desk and asks one question that will change your life forever,

"Are you ready?"

Jethro's plane had taken off exactly at 9:05 am, the flight was due to take three hours in fair conditions but due to the rain plaguing the skies it was to take closer to four. Jethro paid little attention to those around him. He sat in the last row on the right side of the plane. His eyes hardly ever left the files in his hand. The beautiful young lady sitting next to him had been trying to catch his eye since the flight began but he had not seemed to notice. She finally gave up subtle hints and decided to try her hand.

"Hello my name is Audrey. What is yours?" She asked him,

It took Jethro a few seconds before he realized she was talking to him. He looked up slightly at her and then looking back at his files he replied,

"Jethro" but made no attempt to say anymore. Not that he needed to anyways, his answer had boosted the young ladies confidence and she attempted to get him to open up more.

"So, what is it you are reading there?" She asked, trying to seem curious and yet flirtatious.

Jethro's eyes glanced up once again and he went back to reading.

"Team case files" He said.

"Case files? What are you like a cop or something? Or are you like a detective."

"Something like that" Jethro replied quietly.

More silence lapsed between the two of them as the girl tried to find something else to talk about, her eyes happened to glance the front of the file folder. She saw the letters S.I.U stamped on the front in bold letters.

"S.I.U? What does that mean?" She asked.

"Specialized Investigation Unit" Came the reply

"I have never heard of them" She remarked, her eye brow raising slightly.

"Count your blessings then." Jethro stated vaguely.

"Why would you say that?" She asked, a little off set by his reply.

Jethro slowly closed the file folder on his lap, he turned to look the girl in the eyes, his next words sent chills down her back.

"Because when we are called in, it means too many people have suffered or died."

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The rest of the plane ride had been relatively quiet. When Jethro landed, he found a uniformed officer waiting for him in the airport. The officer held a sign that read, "Special Agent Gerhardt" on it. As Jethro walked by the officer he said,

"Lets go"

The officer a little put off, hurried to catch up with Jethro who had already retrieved his own bags. A single large green dufflebag slung across his back. The officer walked beside Jethro until they emerged outside the airport. The officer led Jethro to his car, where Jethro tossed his bag into the trunk. He got into the passenger seat as the officer got into the driver seat.

The car ride from the airport consisted of a series of failed attempts by the officer to spark a conversation. Jethro remained quiet throughout the trip. The file folder still held in his hand although he was not currently reading it. Upon arrival at the police station, Jethro retrieved his bag and walked through the doors. He was greeted by the sheriff, a man by the name of Steve Marco. The sheriff seemed very nervous by Jethro's arrival but that was normal.

"When will you start?" Marco asked, as he showed Jethro to the room that would serve as his office.

Jethro walked behind the desk and sat down, dropping the file folder on to the desk as he did. He was quiet for a moment or two but then his response came loud and clear.

"As soon as the rest of my team arrives here."

Marco nodded a couple of times then he walked out, closing the door behind him as he did so. Leaving Jethro to his own thoughts.

Riza took a bite from her sandwich. It was delicious, but she could tell the bread was not fresh. She made a displeased look, which did not go unnoticed.

"May I ask what's wrong ma'am?" a young waiter said. She took a quick glance at him before biting from her meal again. She did not answer, leaving things at an awkward silence. The man stood there, waiting for an answer but she did not give so much as a nod. He was about to leave, feeling that he had unnecessarily disturb a customer but she stopped him.

"The bread's not fresh. It's a little hard." she muttered, placing a half-eaten sandwich back on the plate. She flipped her hair to her back.

"Sh-Shall I have it changed?" he asked, gulping a bit at her display. She crossed her legs and rested her chin on her palm, before looking at him dead in the eyes.

"What do you think?" she asked him. With this, he immediately took at plate and walked swiftly towards the kitchen. She shrugged her shoulders and placed her payment on the table, plus a tip for the waiter. She straightened her skirt and slung her shoulder bag on. She'd be gone by the time he returns. She never asked him to change it anyway.

She looked up the building in front of her, then to the buildings around it. Yup. She was in the right place. Time to get to work. She entered the building and walked towards the desk, asking a few things. The lady looked her, raising an eyebrow before pointing towards a room. Riza thanked her for the information. She was in a dress and she did not bother wearing more professional clothes today. Besides, she has yet to work right now. She did not look like an interrogator at all. More like someone of to the mall. She wondered what the others might see as a first impression. She wasn't exactly sure if she's late but either way, she's excited to meet her fellow teammates.

Once in front of the room, she took in a deep breath before swinging the door open quite loudly. "I'm here!" she exclaimed, but the sight of only one person being in the room surprised her. Nevertheless, she kept a wide grin on.

Tom entered the sample into the mass spectrometer machine and then turned the machine on to do its business. While that was done he turned to gel electrophoresis to check on dna result which should be ready by now, he took a picture of the result before going to the computer to compare the result with a known DNA sample. Working in one of the two forensic labs in the city and the best if he did say so himself, Tom got most of the forensic testing request for the police cases in the entire city which was considerable. In fact, he was so stacked with work his waiting list stretched to months with most investigator wanting it the day before they sent the request. It meant he had to put alot of hours but it was work he enjoyed and always being the one who allowed for an arrest to made in a case was always satisfying.

"Ok, lets see what we have here."He said excitingly taking his voice recorder." DNA match with the victim with blood found on the vest..."He moved to the result of the spectrometer appearing on the machine screen." Result of sample showed no sight of drugs or anything of interest. Eh, not all the evidence can all be case makers. Overall, with these results and the fibre compassion of those found on the victim and those on the housekeeper uniform i can categorically state without a doubt that...The butler did it! Heh, heh, i always wanted to say that...Too bad i am alone here to enjoy this, good irony is always underappre....Crap."

He had forgotten his meeting with the SIU and he was running late, he rushed out of the lab and made his way to the SIU building. He was nearly out of breath when he reached the room.

"No worries, people. Your forensice expert person has arrived!"

Jethro raised his eye brow at the two new arrivals. He said nothing though. He had nothing to say save it be for the entire team. Until such time he would keep quiet. After all, you learn far more when you listen rather then talk.

Simon just finished in court, having sent yet another person packing off to jail, without even making it all the way through the first witness testimony in the trial. He walks out of the courtroom, escorted by four police officers, now walking towards the room where he was supposed to meet his 'team'. There was a knock on the door, followed by a person confirming their status as a police officer to gain entrance. The police officer open the door, Simon standing at the door with the chains still on his arms, the four police officers standing behind him. He kept silent, walking in and taking a seat that distanced himself from the others slightly, the police officers standing guard right outside the room, in case something happens.

"No worries, people. Your forensics expert person has arrived!" a rather handsome-looking man said upon entering the room. He seemed out of breath, probably thought the he was late but there were just the three of them here. The first person didn't speak and things were quiet for while since this one came in. She didn't really enjoy awkward silences that she didn't cause.

"Hello. Nice to meet you. I'm Riza." she said to them, attempting to start a conversation and hoping someone would reply. She gave a smile before her she let her mind drift a little. She wondered how many more of them will come. For now, she will study these two. It's best to get to know her team at the first day.

Alexandria looked about her room. Her face was set in a small smile.she was working for the police. She was a slippery criminal and was being tracked every step. Since she got caught 5 years ago they have been using her like a consultant. She would help them profile criminals and help them catch them faster. She how ever still kept her drug lord status, but under wraps. She was helping the detectives.

Alexandria had put on a black dress. She awaited a call from Jethro for any case he needed help he had set her up in an apartment and was to stay there unless she told him she was going out then her tracker radius would be turned up to 20 miles. She had been implanted with a tracking device and if she went out of her range she be arrested. Alexandria sat tapping her fingers as she waited for a text. She got one on her hidden phone and smiled. she texted Jethro telling him she needed to go out for groceries. She awaited a text to say she was alowed to leave her ten mile radius for her 20 mile radius.

Simon looked over at Riza, with a pissed off, but serious look on her face. The shackles upon his wrists rattled a little, him getting bored from sitting around. "Can we just get this over with? I have an appointment with my cell soon, and I'd rather not miss it." The last part was half sarcastic, though he seemed as though serious about getting back to his cell.

"Thomas or Tom whichever you like and like wise. I had a look in file, I always happy to work anyone who can make a mob boss squeal with such class and ease to eyes."He said to Reza with a smile and wink before turning Simon. His mood darkened a bit at the sight of criminal in there group. " I am sorry you have someone waiting for you back. Aww...how dare we keep you from him."

"There's nobody waiting for me. You see, it's a lot better being in that cell alone, as I don't have to hear comments from idiotic people." He stood up, the chains rattling quite a bit as he walks over to the door he walked in from. "If this isn't going anywhere, I'm leaving." He was pretty tired of being called to things like this, and then just waiting forever to find it's nothing that he even cared for.

"Sit down and shut up. Your depressing attitude may impress others but it does not impress me." Jethro finally spoke, standing as he did so.

"You are not here to argue or throw a fit. You are here because I have a job at hand and you are all who I have chosen to work to get the job done. However, if you choose to whine and complain then feel free to leave. I know plenty of people who would love to have your position."

"I'm not arguing or throwing a fit. I'm merely getting bored of waiting." He stands against the wall, right next to the door. He waits for something to happen, rubbing the bottom of the beak of bird on his shoulder with one finger. "I'll wait another ten minutes, but after that, I'm out of here. I'd rather not waste time I could be using in court on being bored."

Quinn hurriedly rushed towards the SIU building, one hand holding a phone to her ear. "Honestly, Joe. You know better. Get it done with and apologize." She paused abruptly after hearing the response from the other end and her expression significantly hardened. Her voice sharpened, but the edge was still soft with affection. Her brothers always did stupid things and she felt it was her responsibility as the eldest sibling to make them own them. "I don't care. Do what you want. But I'm your only sister; at least consider that." With that, she hung up and placed the phone carefully into her bag before continuing on to the room.

She entered the SIU room, her mind steady and ready to face whatever challenges lay ahead. Even from her attire, someone could say that Quinn was neat and business-like. She had on a blazer with the sleeves pushed up to her elbows, a cream blouse, and black pants. Being an investigator, she didn't wear skirts or dresses often to work. She didn't wear them often at all. Everything about her was efficient and organized, even her blonde hair was tied back into a ponytail except for strands that framed her face.

Immediately she recognized a state of tension in the room. Other people were there, and there was a guy leaning close to the door, almost too close that she almost hit him when she came in. Her green-hazel eyes flickered over the surroundings briefly as she kept silent, not wanting to say anything wrong.

Tom just grunted the criminal off, he couldn't believe they let his type as a judge. He tried to put his misgiving aside for now, he wasnt blind to the usefulness of criminal mind in the group but was going to call him partner or not watch him. He calmed slightly when the second woman arrived this one he didnt recognition from the files he had." Hey there, welcome to the quite people club better known as the SIU. I am sure you will fit right in. I am tom."He said forcing a smile.

Another woman came into the room and almost immediately, Riza felt the tension on herself be lifted for a moment.

"Finally! Another female!" were the words that slipped from her mouth. She quickly held her tongue but still kept the smile on her face. It was a nice change of scenery to have someone of the same gender in the room. Not wanting anymore awkwardness and bickering, Riza finally decided to speak up. She walked towards the man who arrived first. "Can you brief us with the mission now? We can just fill in the others.. if there are any." she said to him. She noticed the files he was reading. "And perhaps do you have a copy of the target's files that we can read?" She hoped there would be information about the criminals so she could think of ways to get into their mind.

"Sit down and I'll get started and listen well for I will not repeat myself."

Jethro walked over to the middle of the conference room.

"I am Jethro Gerhardt, team leader and basically the leader of the S.I.U. Our first mission is not as simple as a case file because we don't have one. All we know about this criminal organization is the following:

The organization consists of a series of crime rings each lead by a specialist. The organization is based in this city. Outside of this team you are to trust no one and I mean no one. I have chosen each of you because of certain values I have observed. Trust your team mates and don't do anything stupid. People outside of the team will try to sabotage you but you are not to let them. Our first step is to wait and watch, we can't investigate until they give us something to investigate."

"So you're trusting a criminal with this kind of task? The police must be getting desperate," He joked, already knowing how corrupt the police system was, seeing as they let him stay as a prosecutor, even though he's in jail for murder. "You know, I don't see any values could you possibly find in a prosecutor that's a criminal. Are you expecting me to murder our targets, before they murder anybody else? A little hard to do so while in prison, buddy." He pulls his arms out, straightening the chains between his wrists. "I hope you don't mind, but the rattling's getting annoying." He turns his hands, grabbing the chains. He pulls them back together, then forcefully pulls them out as hard as he can, causing the chains to shatter, aside from a few links left on each arm.

Not even flinching Jethro replied

"Your track record is your value. Once a case is presented to you, you make it your goal to see that person in jail and you know exactly what is needed to put them there. You will be very well used should you choose to stay. The city will have to pay thousands by the end of the year for the number of cases you'll work. I hope you're up to the workload."

"Not like I have anything else to do, except maybe sit in that cell. I have one thing I'd like you to do for me once I've started helping with your little operation. Also, it's not something I can really talk about with others here, so I'll just tell you later. For now, I have a nice little time in court about an hour from now. Feel free to come watch and verify my skills for yourself, rather than by paper." He walks out the door, the officers noticing his chains were broken, so one quickly looked inside to make sure everybody was okay, while the other three tried to chain his arms again, but he wouldn't let them, though was staying cooperative and not doing anything that he could easily do to the cops right now.

Alexandria rolled her eye's as she waited on Jethro. He had better mention her at his little meeting. She was stuck in her ten mile radius. Alexandria tapped her nails on the table as she waited his reply. Annoyed still not getting onem she grabbed the phone and called Jethro. She waited for him to pick up. She hated that her "handler" was such a tight ass especially with her ten mile radius. Alexandria glared at her walls. Yeah she wasn't in prison, but it still felt like it.

"Waiting for the hammer to drop the reacting to it is fine by me, it is basicly my job after all."Tom said casually trying his best not to react to the criminal, glancing slightly at the female members of the group finding there presence pleasent."Also i am backed up on work as it is so i have to catch up on that but i will try to keep ours on priority whenever they come up. However i cant make any promises, a standard police case of murder will have to take precedence over SIU drug bust to give an example."

"In this town, the murder will have something to do with the organization. All cases will be connected to this organization."

He looked down as his phone began to ring.

"Hold on"

He flipped his phone open and raising it to his ear he said,

"What?"

Alexandria rolled her eye's at him

"rude, I need my 20 mile radius in my tracker put on. Unless you want me to starve."Alexandria said. She tapped her fingers on her table. She was beyond annoyed at this situation, but she was still able to conduct business.

"Or unless you need me one of your cops needs to pick me up."Alexandria said in a brisk tone

Irish Ice Queen

"Alexandria, you went grocery shopping three days ago. You have enough food for another four days, I saw what you brought home. You're just bored, that is why you want to leave. I'll bring you here when I need you, not a moment sooner."
